What is the Internet and how does it work?

The things that people “ask” Google can be touchingly earnest and a little sad. They also serve as a sort of anonymous Internet zeitgeist. Case in point: here are some screen shots — taken in late October 2009 — of auto-complete suggestions from Firefox’s Google toolbar, based on the first word or two that I typed (“how do,” “what is,” “when will,” “where was,” “who is,” “why is,” and “why”):
